Winemaker 'Camps In'
Posted Thursday, November 25, 2010

Harvest 2010 ends in a flurry... With Mother Nature imposing an extraordinarily late schedule this year, the last two press days at Fall Line were set for Tuesday 11/23 and Wednesday 11/24. On Monday 11/22, Seattle-area weather took a sharp turn into winter with sub-freezing temperatures, up to six inches of snow, and lots of ice. Rising at 5:00 a.m. Tuesday morning with absolute determination to close out the season, Tim loaded up Nancy's car (an all-wheel drive vehicle with new tires) and crawled down to Fall Line on treacherous roads. Intrepid volunteers—heroes, really—were at the winery by 9:00 a.m., and press proceeded as it would have on any normal day.

After Tuesday's clean-up and preparations for the final day of press on Wednesday, Tim was ready for the last phase of the evening by about 9:30 p.m. With roads still hazardous and temperatures plunging into the teens (Fahrenheit), the decision was easy: Fall Line's winemaker would get himself cleaned up at the winery, make his way to a local fast-food joint to chow down, then return to the winery and attempt to catch some shut-eye on the immaculate but nonetheless hard concrete floor. (Camping gear had been packed in anticipation.) With not much snoozing after all, Tim arose at 5:30 a.m. Wednesday to commence the final day of harvest. Again, champions of the Fall Line Volunteer Corps arrived by 9:00, and the last day of press proceeded splendidly.

September 28 to November 24... Initiated by the first pick of fruit on Tuesday 9/28, the Fall Line harvest was completed on this day before Thanksgiving, Wednesday 11/24.
